From my heart to your heart:
Today in the U.S.A. there are nearly a half-million children who are in the foster care system. The children who are under 10 or 12 will eventually find permanent adoptive families. That’s the good news…however, the children who are 13-16 will most likely remain in foster care.
Well, what’s so bad about that?...Eventually, those older children will age-out of the system. They will turn 18, if lucky graduate from high school, and get a job. But where do these children spend Christmas? Who will be there to plan the weddings, have the baby showers and on and on. Yes, some foster families will continue to be a support to these children. But for many, many children family ties end at 18.
I get calls all day long at our agency from well-meaning families who want to adopt a 3-5 year old. When I tell them there really aren’t children in that age group available, these individuals are shocked. “But, I thought there were thousands of children in this country who need homes!” Well, there are…
How many of us go to the local animal shelter and there sit cage after cage of kittens, puppies and adult animals. You know that the cute little puppies and kittens will find homes. But what about that sad-eyed 5 year old Labrador retriever that licked your hand?...
I am here to challenge you to open your heart and home to an older child or a sibling group with the oldest child being a teenager. I know most of us roll our eyes or wince when we discuss the teenage years. It is a difficult period in parenting. But if we were to really be honest with ourselves the teenage years were some of the best. My girls’ work ethic was forged during that time, and in a few years they will take over the ‘reins’ at AAA Partners in Adoption. They are dedicated and devoted to the field of adoption. And, of course, since the teen years, I have had the privilege and honor to walk the journey with them as young adult women.
Please talk to your spouse. If you are single, talk to your support people. I am offering you and, most importantly, a child the chance of a lifetime – a forever family and a home to always be able to return to. Please call me directly at 770-844-2080 or 1-800-516-1080. (You must be a Georgia resident)
Sincerely,
Melissa Clause
